Chandra Montgomery Nicol

Clonlara School
Executive Director
Ann Arbor, MI
You can talk to me about anything! What you might want to know is: Chandra has been associated with Clonlara School (the oldest, continually operating K-12 free school in the U.S.) since its founding, as she and her brother were its original students; her sons also attended Clonlara from 2001-14. She has served the school in many capacities, from summer work in high school, to the A/R bookkeeper, fundraising chairperson, and H.R. director. She now devotes herself to the strategic vision of the organization, its culture, and its multiple foreign offices.

Chandra’s first-hand, 49 years’ of experience in the field of alternative education is her most valuable professional asset. She also holds a B.A. in German and Political Science and a M.S. in Natural Resources, both from the University of Michigan. Chandra is on the Board of Trustees of Clonlara School and a member of the Board of Directors for the Community Chorus of Detroit. She has served as a grant review panelist for the Michigan Council of Arts and Cultural Affairs. She participates in many volunteer activities, including a week of service teaching children in the Dominican Republic with Outreach360. What is, perhaps, Chandra’s most notable trait is that she will not stay silent when she can speak up for a good cause.

As a true follower of Clonlara’s philosophy of lifelong learning, Chandra is an autodidact in many subject areas, including non-profit management, team building, customer service, foreign culture and travel, raising boys, nutrition, and vocal performance. She is practiced in networking, communication arts, and, most recently, in writing about herself in the third person. Chandra makes time for yoga, refreshing friendships, and Pokémon GO. In her spare time, she follows her heart – wherever it leads her.
